Sedation Dentistry at Martin Dental Care
At Martin Dental Care, we want to make sure that every patient is as comfortable as possible when receiving dental treatment, and as part of this we offer a sedation service, which means whatever dental treatment you need, we can treat you with absolutely no pain and no anxiety.
What is Sedation?
Sedation is a treatment that is used to create a state of relaxation and remove the feeling of pain whilst remaining conscious, albeit unaware of what is going on around you. At Martin Dental Care, sedation takes the form of Intravenous Sedation. Intravenous (Or IV) Sedation is where a sedative medication is injected directly into a vein in your arm or the back of your, which will very quickly make you feel very relaxed, like you are lying in a spa or very comfortable bed.
This is different from general anaesthetic, where you are actively unconscious. With conscious IV sedation, you will be aware of the world around you, but deeply relaxed, not anxious and often unaware of how much time has passed or the treatment you’ve received.
Is Sedation Suitable for Everyone?
There is a wide number of people that sedation during dentistry would benefit, particularly those who have a fear or anxiety of seeing the dentist. Before you receive sedation, you will be fully informed of your options, whether you are a suitable patient for sedation and the potential side effects, as well as advice to speed up your recovery, so you know everything you will need to know before agreeing to sedation treatment.
When having sedation, whilst the recovery time is much quicker than being treated under general anaesthetic, please keep in mind that it will take some time after treatment to recover, and someone must come with you to make sure you get to and from the clinic.
